In 2010, the Emily Carr Statue Fundraising Committee raised over $400,000 to give Emily Carr a permanent home on the grounds of the Fairmont Empress Hotel in Victoria, BC. As a passionate British Columbian and “Emily lover”, it was a thrill for me to be named the Fundraising Committee’s honourary chair.
Barbara Paterson’s larger-than-life bronze statue of “Our Emily”, with her Javanese monkey ‘Woo’ perched on her shoulder and her dog ‘Billie’ standing nearby, was unveiled at the Fairmont Empress on October 13, 2010. Next time you’re in Victoria be sure to pay her a visit.
